2008, 2009, Live solo performance

In September 2008, on a plane home from Deborah Hay’s Solo Performance Commissioning Project (SPCP) Fiona wrote the first score for a solo dance that became Abrielle. This score arose out of a need to direct an overflow of creative stimulation and form a personal response to the experience of the Solo Performance Commissioning Project and commissioning Hay’s solo, I’ll Crane for You.
Abrielle was first performed as a solo work and subsequently evolved toward a duet with Rob McCreddie. In all it’s incarnations, Abrielle has remained grounded in a series of scored provocations/instructions that activate the performers to traverse the landscape of a female character who is essentially unpredictable, contradictory and playful. The work is so titled because the name Abrielle means open, secure, protected. Props, lighting and music support an augmentation of Abrielle’s world both for the performers and audience and gradually illuminate the curious land of her existence.
